7 Paths to Wisdom

Notes from a Lesson taught on April 1st in our Sunday School Class.  Audio will be uploaded to our podcast

Proverbs 1:2  To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;
To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;
To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.
A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:
1.  Pray for it
James 1:4  But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.
 5If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
 6But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.
2.  Learn from Mistakes
Proverbs 24:16 For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.”
An architect's most useful tools are an eraser at the drafting board, and a wrecking bar at the site.
“Get up every time I fall down. Life is a teacher. There is more opportunity to be wise at 70 than at 17. There is more opportunity to be bitter and twisted as well! The difference is surely in the attitude each time I start again. Did I learn? Did I fail forward?”
“Some of the best lessons we learn are from our mistakes and failures. The error of the past should be wisdom of the future.”
3.  Seek out and heed godly advice.
Proverbs 11:14Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.
Ecclesiastes 7:5  It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.
Proverbs 9:8   Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.
  1. Be Quiet
Proverbs 29:11  A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards.
Proverbs 12:23  A prudent man concealeth knowledge: but the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness.
"Just some advice... before vocally choosing sides of controversial issues, be sure you have all the information necessary. Fools rush to judgment. Give time to understand the whole matter, and then decide if it's even worth adding your voice to. Silence is not always weakness... more often than not, it's wisdom." Jay Jones
1 Thessalonians 4:11 And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you;
5.   Recognize and understand what real wisdom is.
“As a pastor and a church, we must create an environment where people make good decisions.”  J.T. Pugh.
Many people imitate foolishness, for they think what they see is smart.
James 3:16For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.
 17But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
 18And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.
 6.  Seek to know discretion
William Shakespeare
Isaiah 26: 23Give ye ear, and hear my voice; hearken, and hear my speech.
 24Doth the plowman plow all day to sow? doth he open and break the clods of his ground?
 25When he hath made plain the face thereof, doth he not cast abroad the fitches, and scatter the cummin, and cast in the principal wheat and the appointed barley and the rie in their place?
 26For his God doth instruct him to discretion, and doth teach him.
 27For the fitches are not threshed with a threshing instrument, neither is a cart wheel turned about upon the cummin; but the fitches are beaten out with a staff, and the cummin with a rod.
 28Bread corn is bruised; because he will not ever be threshing it, nor break it with the wheel of his cart, nor bruise it with his horsemen.
 29This also cometh forth from the LORD of hosts, which is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in working.
  1. Try the Spirits
1 John 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
A.   The Word Test               Is it compatible with scripture?   If not reject it.
B.   The Peace Test             In prayer what does the spirit reveal?
          C.   The Man of God Test     Counsel with a proven minister?
D.   The Time Test               In time everything will be revealed.  Some things only time will tell.
